研究テーマ：「Tentative title: Response of hyporheic and benthic invertebrates to a dem-induced
flooding and community recovery patterns」
I am interested in the anthropogenic pressure on the river ecosystem. Japan provides a
great research opportunities because of the large number of dams and hydropower
plants that have altered the natural river environment. I want to study their effect on
the invertebrates inhabiting the hyporheic zone. During the extreme conditions such as
floods and droughts, hyporheic zone can serve as a shelter for aquatic invertebrates
from other parts of the river (hyporheic refuge hypothesis). Because there is a strong
connection between benthic zone (river bottom) and the hyporheic zone (water
saturated sediments), I am planning research to better understand the vertical
migrations of the invertebrates between the two during a dam-induced high water
discharge event. Also, I want to compare their community recovery patterns after the
conditions return to normal.
